Our Work with Young People

At I Can & I Am, we believe that mental health is as important as physical health. It is about how we think, feel and act. Just as our physical health can fluctuate, so can our mental health – sometimes we feel well and other times we might struggle.

To support young people in maintaining positive mental health, we use a straightforward yet powerful approach to foster their self-belief. Our tools and strategies focus on developing a growth mindset, helping individuals recognise their strengths, and teaching the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. By equipping young people with these skills, we empower them to build confidence and resilience that will equip them throughout their lives.

The charity works with many thousands of young people every year within primary, secondary and SEN schools as well as whilst in Further Education. Through our presentations from James Shone and workshops on board our travelling double decker buses, the messages of I Can & I Am are increasingly becoming a part of the day-to-day conversation about how to maintain self-belief and learn the fundamentals of resilience.

Making a real difference

The positive feedback from schools and other participants underscores the effectiveness of the 'I Can & I Am' approach. Not only are we inundated with positive testimonials following James Shone's presentations, but surveys carried out by visitors to the I Can & I Am buses show that the average score is 4.8 / 5. Added to this, over 80% state that their self-belief improved having spent time on board the bus.

Many schools who have been a part of our bus programme have noted significant and long-term improvements in confidence, engagement and well-being, as well as enhanced overall support and morale across school communities and businesses. Increased methods of impact measurement being implemented during 2025 will be measuring in closer details exactly which areas of school life are most greatly affected.
